Since the seventeenth century, the maritime expeditions of the Spanish Empire not only reshaped global trade and colonial networks, but also profoundly influenced the historical trajectories of Taiwan and the Austronesian world. This international academic conference focuses on the encounters between the Spanish and the Austronesian peoples of Taiwan, reexamining the interactions between early modern East Asia and the Austronesian world through perspectives on language, culture, knowledge production, and transregional exchange.
